Things stopping me from removing windows XP from my laptop and install Debian are webcam with YahooIM. Now that I found Gyach Enhanced, I guess i can say sayonara to XP.

Steps to install Gyach Enhanced on Debian sarge ( copied from here )

  1. Check if gpgme, mcrypt, gtk2, alien are installed, if not install.
    • Some thing like apt-cache search …. ( gpgme, mcrypt, gtk2, alien)
    • apt-get install … (missing packages)
  2. Then go here and dowload the following packages:
  3. Next bunzip, untar jasper and install jasper
    • tar -jxvf jasper-1.700.5-patched-source.tar.bz2
    • cd jasper-1.700.5 (directory created by untarring)
    • ./configure
    • make
    • su ;;;login as root
    • make install
    • ldcofig
    • exit ;;;exit from root login
  4. Then on to main pacakage
    • Convert Gyach-Enhanced….rpm file to debian by issuing:

      alien -d Gyach-Enhanced-pYVoiceChat-1.0.5-1.i586.rpm

    • Using dpkg install debian file generated from previous step

      dpkg -i gyach-enhanced-pyvoicechat_1.0.5-2_i386.deb

  5. That was not all for me.
    • When I started gyach, I got following error:

gyach: error while loading shared libraries: libltdl.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    • apt-cache search libltdl

libltdl3 - A system independent dlopen wrapper for GNU libtool

    • apt-get install libltdl3
  6. Go fix webcam …

I’ve not tested it much. I still could not get my webcam work. I’ll try it only on sundays(Only day that I use messenger). GyachE is good just as messenger, atleast better anything else on Debian. Once I fix my webcam, I’ll know how good is webcam support in GyachE.

I was having a lot of trouble getting a webcam to work, until I found EasyCam which installs drivers for a lot of webcams. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Webcam
